Digital Surveillance

Falls Earth Station uses the latest digital video management technology from SONY, DVS, Pelco, Samsung and Intellex across the campus data networking infrastructure to allow multiple monitoring facilities, remote management of surveillance assets, and surveillance/security alarming integrated tightly into the overall access and control system.

Surveillance is used for security purposes and requires a notice to be posted in locations where a video or digital recording of an area may occur. Such notices often intimidate prospective violators, and help to protect environments from potential damages, thefts or crimes. When used in conjunction with other control systems, a basic surveillance system is a great resource for university environments.

System Integration

Residence halls can be monitored by placing a fixed camera at the access point and connecting it to a digital video server in order to keep a complete record of who enters the building. By integrating the surveillance function into the access control function, we can then specify the conditions under which the images at an access point will be recorded (such as only after hours, holidays, etc.). We can also determine various alarm conditions.

For example, the system could be configured to notify the monitor station operator screen when an invalid or expired card is used at an entrance. The screen will show the operator a live video of the person attempting to use the card, and the complete transaction would be recorded as digital video and documented within the automated access control log.

Further, the system can be configured to present the monitor station operator with a graphic depiction of which building access point is involved, and the ID picture of record of the cardholder. The operator could then remotely unlock the door upon visual identity confirmation. By combining these systems with the phone or intercom system, the station operator could communicate directly with the cardholder.
